Community Involvement
Years ago, my Unitarian Universalist faith compelled me to volunteer my time in a homeless shelter run by the Community Church of New York. Our shared UU values call us to go beyond the walls of our congregations and use our time and talents to help build a better world. What inspires us on Sunday must translate into action on Monday. Side with Love is more than a slogan it’s a requirement of our faith.
I strongly believe that we work best when we are in partnership with others who are also doing the work of building a better world. I have been a member of Wilmington Faith Leaders United (formerly known as the Ministerial Roundtable) where I work with clergy from different faith communities. Together we have impacted the community to provide shelter for the homeless, lobby our city council, and build bridges. This is also the work of our congregations’ members, to do justice. In some cases we will work on a single project together such as voter registration. In other cases we will partner with people from outside our congregation to work on causes we support. In all cases the work we do is because we are Unitarian Universalists. We are members of our congregations not just for ourselves but for our community as well. Together we can do great things, when we are dedicated and committed. Together we can show the world, through our deeds, what it means to say “I am a Unitarian Universalist.” |
